Speaking in class triggers the same stress response as physical danger for some students.

Being called on unexpectedly can cause a freeze response (part of the flight or fight response), even if the student understands the material well.

This is because anxiety activates the amygdala, the brain’s threat detector. When it’s switched on, the prefrontal cortex or the thinking part of the brain is less accessible, so a student may know the answer but be unable to express it.
