Anxiety

For friends

If your friend is feeling really anxious then ask them how they would like you to support them. For example, they might like to be next to you in a situation they feel anxious or they might like you to help them face their fears.

Supporting a friend who is anxious is a great thing to do but remember they need to find ways to help themselves since anxiety can be treated very effectively.

Offer to find out more about anxiety and to go with them to get some help. Offer to work through the Clear Fear app with them so that they know you are there when they are making change. Cheer on their progress; it’s good to be acknowledged for doing difficult things.

The stem4 Combined Minds app also helps friends and family support a young person who may have a diagnosed anxiety conditions.

You can also offer to be with them when they ask for help. See stem4’s ‘Asking for help’ leaflet on the Resources page.

Sometimes having a friend who is anxious can make you feel anxious too. Try and have a break from things and that might include from your friend too. Remember the physical symptoms of anxiety are your body’s way of telling you it’s under too much stress. You might want to try out some of the techniques in Clear Fear too.
