I want to know more about how you design your apps

Click here for stem4’s app development process diagram.

stem4 follows a strict process in developing and upgrading their mental health apps for young people. This consists of:

  1. Requirements and planning.
    • Identify unmet need; define purpose and requirements using research evidence and clinical expertise.
  2. Design and specification.
    • Run design workshops with young people; use their perspectives to shape the product through co-design.
    • Develop detailed functionality, content and design with our technology partner.
  3. Clinical safety and assurance.
    • Clinical safety, data protection and security considered throughout. Follow DCB0129 clinical risk management processes and maintain a Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA).
    • Our apps are developed and assured against relevant standards, including GDPR, ICO Age Appropriate Design Code (AADC; Children’s Code), and Cyber Essentials.
  4. Development.
    • Develop the app against agreed clinical, functional and technical requirements, alongside producing supporting resources.
  5. Testing and validation.
    • Structured testing covering functional, accessibility, user acceptance and regression testing across devices and operating systems, with issues addressed before release.
  6. Release and distribution.
    • Release following development, assurance and testing, with distribution designed around accessibility to young people and sustainable access.
  7. Monitoring and improvement.
    • Monitor anonymous usage and user feedback to maintain safety and usefulness, and inform future iterations.

If you have any questions about the development process, please get in contact at enquiries@stem4.org.uk.
