With 9 out of 10 children owning a mobile phone by the time they turn 11 (Ofcom, 2024), smartphones, adolescence and mental health are almost irreversibly intertwined.

Many schools across the UK are restricting the use of mobile phones at school following the Government’s latest guidance and whilst aiming to improve focus and behaviour, these changes can also impact students’ mental health.

Join our expert speakers online on Monday 18th May at 4:15pm as they discuss the current landscape and learn practical strategies for supporting student mental health in this new age.

This free session is ideal for teachers, school counsellors and any other school staff who are looking to understand more about how they can equip themselves and their students, with practical tips, tools and strategies to manage pupil wellbeing effectively in the absence of in-school phone-based support.

We will explore:

  • How to identify and support students whose mental health might be impacted, including signs of anxiety and emotional distress
  • The psychological functions mobile phones can serve, and school-based alternatives to support emotional regulation
  • The social and systemic impact of smartphone bans on transitions, peer relationships and vulnerable groups
  • Strategies for implementing and sustaining smartphone bans for staff, balancing safeguarding and workload
  • Creating safe alternatives for students requiring emotional support
