Webinar for Parents/Carers: Building Self-esteem & Positive Body Image in Boys & Young Men

Loading Events

Whilst there is a focus on building confidence and self-esteem in girls, boys’ struggles with self-esteem often go unnoticed. Many boys and young men feel they have to conform to male gender stereotypes which focus on ‘strength’, both physical and emotional, and encourage competition and advantage.

Although body image is seen as more of a concern for adolescent girls and women, boys and young men also report being affected by the physical standards often portrayed in the media as goals to achieve.

Boys and young men generally express low self-esteem differently though. Some may act out by displaying challenging behaviours, whilst others may ‘escape’ into distraction behaviours or withdraw.

Parents and carers play an important role in identifying and supporting positive self-esteem and worth in their young person. This webinar will cover:

– Early warning signs of low self-esteem and low self-worth in boys and young men;

– How to identify when eating issues might turn into eating disorders;

– Management of muscle dysmorphia;

– Practical ways in which parents and carers might engage with and address some of these concerns.
