- In a stunning display of endurance and commitment Zac and James braved heavy rain, extreme heat and uphill climbs to cycle the length of the Way of the Roses on to raise funds and awareness for stem4.
Zac describes their experience; - “We started in Morecambe on the west coast and it was raining for most of the day. It was tough as the bike wheels would skid and even James got a flat tyre on the way. However we did eventually make it to Settle by the afternoon. The second day was the hardest day; The heatwave had just started and most of the day was hilly as we were travelling through the Yorkshire Dales. For one section it was a 25% gradient ascent for over two miles! The day was long and hard but we did eventually make it to Ripon. The third day was mostly flat but the heatwave meant that it was 32 degrees Celsius outside. This meant that it was important to wear sunscreen and keep hydrated. As well as this our muscles were aching from the previous two days of cycling and so this made the day particularly tricky. We passed through the city of York and then stayed the night in Pocklington. The final day started with an ascent out of Pocklington but overall this stage was the easiest. The temperature had cooled down to 28 degrees Celsius and our muscles were adjusting and did not ache so much. We were also motivated by the knowledge that we were near the end. By the afternoon we made it to Bridlington on the east coast and this felt extremely gratifying. Overall we cycled the whole distance in just over 24 hours. It was an incredible experience and a great challenge to raise awareness/money for stem4 this way. In total we have almost approximately £1400.”
We are incredibly impressed by and indebted to Zac and James for this spectacular achievement making them one of the top young fundraisers of 2015.
