Third Sector Awards: Charity of the Year (Small) – Winner: stem4

This prestigious award goes to the charity or voluntary sector organisation that has had a truly exceptional year and whose recent achievements have attracted the admiration of the sector.

What the judges said about stem4

The judges described stem4 as ‘Packing a lot of punch for a small charity – a strong impact developed through strong relationships.’

About stem4

As a small charity, stem4 supports the mental health of young people in multiple different ways. These include mental health education, both face-to-face and through our digital Head Ed and Head Ed Light programmes, by creating free, evidence-based mental health apps, and numerous resources, including six translations. We also support parents and carers, educators, GPs, and school nurses since we believe that everyone involved in supporting a young person needs to work together to help young people negotiate the challenges they face, enabling them to thrive.

stem4’s nomination for Charity of the Year

We believe stem4 deserved to be considered for this award since it has provided vital work benefitting over a 100,000 young people’s mental health over the past year alone.

The past two years have been challenging for charities since traditional methods of fundraising have been minimised and demand has outstripped resource. Switching to digital delivery has been smooth and we have aimed at clever growth. This has included promoting our apps, together with additional adaptations to help with pandemic challenges and our educational programme, with a home learning element added. Also widely distributed anxiety management videos to manage immunisation anxiety and several resources, including translations for BAME, LGBTQIA+ communities.

Third Sector Awards: Charity Chief Executive – Winner: Dr Nihara Krause, stem4

This accolade is awarded to the chief executive who has made an outstanding contribution to his or her organisation, or the wider sector, over the past year.

Dr. Nihara Krause’s work with stem4

At stem4, we believe there is no one more suited to receive this award than our CEO, Dr. Nihara Krause, who has provided an exceptional and excellent service to improving teenage mental health in the UK and Internationally, taking the charity to a new level of impactful success last year. Having established the charity ten years ago when there was minimal focus on teenage mental health, she has been an absolute force in her vision and dedication to providing clinically safe resources to teenagers, parents and carers, schools, and primary health care workers. Creator of four mental health apps (fifth in development) downloaded extensively; a digital mental health literacy programme; numerous COVID-19 related resources translated into six languages, providing hundreds of talks/webinars; she focuses on evidence-based practice, co-creation, inclusion, diversity, those in need.

She provides positive, practical, and effective strategies. The stem4 team has grown and flourished under her guidance and the charity punches way above its weight because of the enormous input, breadth of offers and dedication she offers. Whilst delivering on stem4’s strategic objectives, she helps the charity be responsive to need by providing original and impactful resources and has helped stem4 flourish, especially over the past year.
