It is no secret that children and young people across the UK have faced significant change over the last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The most recent announcement of a third national lockdown has meant that many plans have, yet again, been put on hold. Exams have been cancelled, schools are shutting their doors, and once again we are all unable to see loved ones beyond our household.

It can be really difficult to stay positive, or look forward to anything in the future, when the rules (and our goals) keep changing. Despite being incredibly patient, and putting a lot of effort into following the rules, we know that young people across the country are feeling frustrated that it doesn’t feel like things are improving. Progress and feeling better does not always happen in a simple or linear way. But we want to assure you that things will improve, even if it is one small step at a time. stem4 are so proud of the youth in the UK, of your willingness to adjust – however uncomfortable it is – in order to help others. In turn, we are committed to providing small steps of support to help you move forward, from lockdown to beyond.

We want to emphasise that it is okay to ease yourself into 2021 and have a January full of comfort and care for yourself. There can be lots of pressure as a New Year begins to start a new strict workout routine, push yourself harder than ever before, or punish yourself for relaxing over the festive season. But this year, the only thing you need to focus on is getting through each day positively. It is okay to prioritise comforting yourself, especially during a lockdown.

Look after yourself. Remember, ‘there is hope, even if your brain is telling you it isn’t there’ (John Green)
