Infant school children are increasingly online and given more digital independence by parents, according to Ofcom’s annual study of children’s relationship with the media and online worlds.
  • Children aged 5 to 7 increasingly present online – a third use social media unsupervised, and growing number have personal profiles
  • Three-quarters of parents talk to younger children about staying safe online
  • Ofcom signals plans to develop additional proposals on how AI can be used to detect illegal content and harms to children

It can feel quite overwhelming, trying to keep up with what younger and younger children are doing online, whilst trying to also make sense of the sometimes strong opinions about what we should do about it.

For years, stem4 has been listening to young people, their parents, professionals, and digesting the latest research, so we can give everyone some ideas about what they might want to do. Key, is being able to talk with young people about their digital life, so they are not on their own, and have someone to turn to, should something difficult occur.

Last year, stem4 was commissioned by Ofcom to train professionals so that they can talk with young people, and their families, about digital issues, with confidence. The training has not only been highly successful, but the professionals are feeling the benefit too, as are young people who usually feel what happens online cannot be talked about.
