The ending of the long summer holidays heralds the start of going back to education or work.

For those returning to school and college – it’s exciting to catch up with friends but not so easy to get back to school days and learning, homework and getting up early.

To help you get back on track here are some tips –

Re-establish a sleep routine:

One of the nice things about the summer holidays is a relaxed sleep routine. Going to bed late and sleeping in late are both common. To be efficient at getting up early, start getting back to your normal term-time bedtime in increments around a week and a half before you start. So, if your summer bedtime is 10.30 pm and your term time bedtime 8.30 pm then start with going to bed at 10pm, then 9.30 pm, 9 pm every other day so that by the time you get back you would have had just under a week of
sleeping at your regular bedtime. Do the same for your wake-up time so that you have experience of getting up early.

Get organised:
Sort out your room and get things you need for school or college in order. If you wear a uniform, make sure they are washed and ironed and that your school shoes fit. Borrow or purchase any textbooks, create a filing system and sort out a space to do your homework in.
If you have any preparation such as a reading list you must cover, now is the time to start.

Look forward:
Make plans to learn from the past. Look forward to learning new skills and improving the skills you have. Plan to try at least one new activity a term.

Get into gear:
Just as your body needs to train to get into condition, so does your brain. Start reading, listening to educational podcasts, watch interesting documentaries, visit galleries and museums.
