Advice from Clinical Psychologist Dr Nihara Krause, for those who have experienced an eating disorder, but are trying to re-enter socialising as restrictions ease:

  1. Be as honest as you can about how you are feeling with family and friends. This way, they can make sure they fit your needs into the plans, such as visiting a restaurant you will be happy with, or providing something you can eat if you’re visiting.
  2. Have a ready prepared answer for anyone who might comment on your weight, shape or the amount of food you are eating. Preparing for these uncomfortable comments will give you the resilience to continue with your socialising if you hear something triggering.
  3. Before you go out to eat for the first time, try and plan what you think you are going to eat. Stick to your treatment meal plan if you are following one. Or if not, it could be a great opportunity to try something new.
  4. Don’t skip meals during the day in order to cope with going out – this will make you hungrier when you are out, making you more likely to feel out of control.
  5. Find a quick method of relaxation that works for you, for example, a breathing exercise or listening to a favourite song. That way, when you join social situations that involve food, you’ll know what to do to relax if you’re finding it difficult.
