SUMMARY:Webinar for Parents/Carers: Building Self-esteem & Positive Body Image in Boys & Young Men
DESCRIPTION:Whilst there is a focus on building confidence and self-esteem in girls\, boys’ struggles with self-esteem often go unnoticed. Many boys and young men feel they have to conform to male gender stereotypes which focus on ‘strength’\, both physical and emotional\, and encourage competition and advantage. \nAlthough body image is seen as more of a concern for adolescent girls and women\, boys and young men also report being affected by the physical standards often portrayed in the media as goals to achieve. \nBoys and young men generally express low self-esteem differently though. Some may act out by displaying challenging behaviours\, whilst others may ‘escape’ into distraction behaviours or withdraw. \n \n  \nParents and carers play an important role in identifying and supporting positive self-esteem and worth in their young person. This webinar will cover: \n– Early warning signs of low self-esteem and low self-worth in boys and young men; \n– How to identify when eating issues might turn into eating disorders; \n– Management of muscle dysmorphia; \n– Practical ways in which parents and carers might engage with and address some of these concerns. \n  \nInterested in attending? Click here to register your place or scan the QR code below. \nYou can also download the programme here.

SUMMARY:stem4 Webinar for GPs and Nurses - Children and Young People's Mental Health
DESCRIPTION:**Please note** This webinar has been postponed and will not be taking place on April 1. Any updates to the event will be added to this page. Thank you. \n  \nJoin us online for a free\, lunchtime webinar hosted by stem4 for GPs and nurses\, on challenges in mental health care for children and young people during the pandemic.  \nPrimary health care providers were struggling to support the mental health of children and young people presenting with a range of mental ill health conditions pre-pandemic due to historic underfunding of services and increased need. The COVID-19 health emergency has further created widespread health\, psychological\, economic\, and social impacts. The long-lasting ramifications for children and young people\, and their parents and carers\, pose considerable mental health risks. Resources are even further stretched with many GPs finding it hard to support their young patients and\, as per the results of a recent survey\, having to ‘act beyond their level of competency’*. \nThis lunchtime seminar ‘Can you be agile when pouring from an empty pot?’ with Consultant Clinical Psychologist and CEO of stem4\, Dr Nihara Krause\, is informed by psychological evidence\, her clinical experience of working with young people and their families and the charity’s work in mental health literacy and in creating mental health tech for children and young people\, their families and carers\, educational establishments and GPs and school nurses over the past ten years. \nThe seminar will cover: \n\nA snapshot of the types of difficulties children and young people are presenting with currently\nData from the latest national stem4 GP survey March 2022\nSupporting young people with mental ill health issues such as eating disorders and self-harm with suicidal intent who don’t meet the threshold acceptance criteria\, including managing risk\nLong COVID in children and young people\, presentation and treatment\nThe role of digital interventions\nImpact on healthcare providers\, supporting yourselves from burnout\n\n  \nThere will be time for Q&A\, please send your questions in advance to education@stem4.org.uk. \n  \nInterested in attending? Click here to register your place\, or email any queries to education@stem4.org.uk. \n  \n(*2021 survey by Young Minds) \n

SUMMARY:Wimbledon Common Santa Parkrun
DESCRIPTION:The annual Wimbledon Common Santa 5k Parkrun takes place this Saturday 14th December and this year stem4 is the beneficiary of their Christmas collection. \nAnyone is welcome to along to what is sure to be a great charity event! Runners are encouraged to wear red or fancy dress\, with many choosing to don a Santa hat – but guests are welcome too for support\, encouragement and festive cheer! The parkrun itself is free\, but mince pies and a donation are welcomed. The suggested donation is a pound\, though many runners find a fiver is less annoying in the running shorts\, and since they are now plastic\, there’s no excuse that they might get sweaty! \nA team of stem4 volunteers will be there from 8.30am at the Windmill Car Park with collection buckets and supporting the runners. Post race we will enjoy a festive time with cakes\, mince pies and more! \nThankyou Wimbledon Park Runners for your ongoing support and generosity. Merry Christmas!
